HOW WE OPERATE
Mission Statement: Our mission is to engage, excite, and educate through immersive performances that break down barriers and inspire the opera fans of the future.
Artistic Committee members have full and equal ownership of programming, hiring, and company processes. This organization does not have an Artistic Director. Instead, the committee performs these duties democratically. This helps to ensure that the major decisions the company makes are vetted and true to our mission. It also empowers Artistic Committee (AC) members to help shape New Camerata Opera into the opera company they feel NYC needs and to stay current and relevant in accordance with those needs.
Compensation: The majority of Artistic Committee administrative work is volunteer-based, with a modest yet growing bi-annual stipend. Stipends are paid in tiers and determined by the average hours per week the member spends on administrative work. In addition, Artistic Committee members will be paid any and all standard artist fees for project participation. A 5% commission will be paid for any successful grant writing ventures. In the past season, total maximum fees for an Artistic Committee member ranged from $750-3,000. The organization has a plan for yearly increases to administrative compensation that are proportional to the company’s general operating budget.
Roles: Current NCO AC members have focuses in Production, Treasury, Operations, Development, Art Direction, Social Media, Marketing, Communications, and Community Engagement
The Artistic Committee reports to an independent Board of Directors. This body helps further vet the committee’s decisions, particularly with regard to fiscal governance. The Board ensures that conflicts of interest do not appear in seasonal contracting and that the organization remains mission-focused. The Board achieves this through a minimum of five annual meetings. The Board and Artistic Committee also call on NCO’s Advisory Board, made up of experienced career professionals, for guidance on a wide array of specializations within the field.
WHAT WE DO
Mainstage: All aspects of production - from hiring singers, designers, and technical staff to securing rights, the venue, and contracting the orchestra - are handled by members of the Artistic Committee. The Production Committee heads these tasks, with support from the rest of the AC. From pre-production through closing night, these Mainstage projects can often take 6 months to bring to fruition.
CamerataWorks: CamerataWorks is NCO’s in-house production studio devoted to the creation of operatic film. We have produced the acclaimed series The Ives Project, featuring 9 narrative interpretations of Charles Ives songs, Julie, an original 27-minute new commission from composer Whitney George and librettist Wallis Darke, The Prince von Pappenschmear, another new commission trilogy based on the imagination of librettist Adam Laten Willson, and Refractions, a new anthology series of short films directed by Kimille Howard, featuring exclusively BIPOC artists and composers. This division is currently producing One Train, a new animated opera cartoon for children, and a collaboration with Camerata Piccola. Our films have been featured in international film festivals and publications. This branch utilizes skillsets from Artistic Committee members that include video-editing, cinematography, lighting, production coordination, and even craft services.
Camerata Piccola: This is the branch of our company that produces children’s opera. Fully staged productions with piano, costumes, set, and props are performed in libraries, schools, parks, and other venues for audiences ranging in age from Pre-K through high school. From self-producing these programs to forging partnerships with other organizations, this initiative is at the very core of our mission. A Camerata Piccola Committee undertakes the responsibilities and duties associated with this programming.
Programming: New Camerata Opera strives to program a wide range of works that simultaneously engages diverse opera lovers and excites audience members who are new to the genre. We endeavor to cultivate immersive experiences that bring folx into the world of the story from the moment they enter the performance space. Whether we are producing a well-known piece or unearthing a lesser-known work, we work to create something truly unique that leaves a lasting impression.
Marketing: New Camerata Opera strives to maintain a cohesive, on-brand image while constantly managing a wide array of programming styles. This challenge is spearheaded by members of the Artistic Committee who utilize their experience in graphic design, web design, advertisement, and art direction to communicate who we are to the public at large and to unceasingly grow our brand.
Social Media: The company relies on a strong social media presence to sell tickets, promote our work, and fundraise for our initiatives. The organization uses Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok to communicate with our audiences and digital communities. Artistic Committee members with experience in online engagement, digital branding, photography, and content creation work towards maintaining a curated presence on these platforms every day.
Development: Fundraising is an integral part of making opera possible. We employ a variety of strategies, including fundraising via mail, email, social media, and in-person events.
Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Accessibility: The Artistic Committee, Board of Directors, and Advisory Board work to prioritize diversity in our administration, staffing, and casting. In addition, the organization values internal and external input to gain perspective for constant re-evaluation and improvement. The growth and relevance of this company are contingent upon the genuine access that is fostered in our programming, protocols, branding, and practices.
WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR
An Artist: We are seeking an artist who is passionate about and regularly engages in the operatic art world. If you are a singer, musician, designer, conductor, or director who shares our love of opera, we encourage you to apply.
An Administrator: We are seeking an administrator with strong verbal and written communication skills who is comfortable with email, phone, and text messaging. Slack is our preferred, daily mode of communication. This app is where a great majority of the company's business is discussed and voted upon.
A Team Player: Our company culture is collaborative at its core. Artistic Committee members must listen to one another and work with each other towards achieving our common goals. The democratic structure of this company is only effective if there is mutual respect amongst Artistic Committee members and an unwavering willingness to work as part of the team.
